Prong-billed Barbet. Not as striking as the Red-headed Barbet, but still a very cool bird. This is the bird to which Alexander Skutch said, "Perhaps no birds I ever studied gave me more pleasant surprises than this one." He describes how this species has a two-pronged lower mandible and the upper mandible rests between the two prongs when the bill is closed. He described seven individuals that roosted together in a single cavity ("dormitory"). They have a strange call that stumped Skutch for a long time before he finally located an individual singing.

Someone asked me what my favourite bird of the trip was. I cant possibly choose just one. My photos aren't nearly as good as someone else's (@blairs_wildlife), but these 3 birds were the highlights for me: Sunbittern, Costa Rican Pygmy-Owl, and Thicket Antpitta.

Why?

The Sunbittern was at the end ofthe day when we were headed back and it was so nice to finish a day on such a high note. Gorgeous bird, especially when it spreads its wings.

The Costa Rican Pygmy-Owl was when we were looking for quetzals. The owl flew in and immediately the trees erupted in commotion from hummingbirds and songbirds angry with the owl. It hung out for awhile, long enough for locals to come by and look through our scope to get a look themselves. Love sharing these moments with local folks too.

The Thicket Antpitta was early one morning when we went to pick up a trail camera for two of the clients. Another client tagged along for the walk. It felt like a special moment to be able share this super cool bird with her and watch the antpitta wiggle it's little round body.

We had almost 100 species on this boat tour. If you want to see birds in the tropics, do a boat tour in the mangroves. Will not disappoint.

Fruit feeders make for such great photo ops. This was one of our lunch spots, so we enjoyed some delicious Costa Rican food and watched birds come in to do the same thing. In this photo, we have Scarlet-rumped Tanager, Silver-throated Tanager and Blue-Gray Tanager sharing a banana.

Just on my way home after an amazing 10 days in Costa Rica helping guide a truly wonderful group of people. We saw so many cool birds and other critters, we laughed a lot, we ate too much, we enjoyed all the sunshine, and we had many great photo opportunities like this one with Red-legged Honeycreepers.

These photos are from one of yesterday's stops. Some folks in Costa Rica have preserved some of their property for birds with feeders, natural flowers and vegetation, and water. They charge a fee for people to come view their setup. This provides $$ to locals, habitat for birds, and viewing opportunities for tourists; its a win-win-win situation!!

Two female Ring-necked Pheasants are checking out our backyard after the storm last night. The ground is frozen solid with freezing rain covering the snow, so access to any food that may be hiding under the snow is currently inaccessible. They're helping themselves to some of the dropped seeds from our feeders. The Blue Jays are helping by knocking seeds off the feeder every time they come in for their own bite to eat.

The Bully of the Birdfeeder or the Belle of the Ball? Can it be both? Arguably the most beautiful visitor to our feeders (yes, even more than the cardinals and grosbeaks!), a lot of people "hate" jays because they tend to scatter all the smaller birds when they visit feeder. They're big and noisy. They make a mess. BUT did you know they're super smart? When people talk about bird intelligence, they often talk about crows & ravens, members of the Corvidae family. But jays , magpies, and other bullies of the birdfeeders are also in the family Corvidae and are ALSO super smarty-pants! Tool use has been documented in captive Blue Jays - they just don't get the same attention as their amazing cousins, the New Caledonian Crow, who take tool use and puzzle-solving to the next level. Ah well, I still appreciate ya Blue Jay 💙

A photo from PEI last week. We pulled over to check out this huge group of ducks. They were mostly Greater Scaup but we also saw many Common and Barrow's Goldeneye in the mix. Amazing to see so many ducks taking advantage of this little patch of open water.

Christmas Bird Count N°3 today in River Hebert, NS for the Amherst 2024 CBC. This is the first time in my life that I've done more than 2 counts in one season AND the first time I've done counts in different provinces in one season. Fairly easy to do when you live this close to the border 😅

Webe had exceptional weather, and good birding. Today I really enjoyed the little visit from 3 curious Gray Jays/Canada Jays/Whiskeyjacks/Camp-robbers/... I just LOVE these birds 😍

Have you heard about @birds.canada Project Feederwatch? Count birds at your feeder for two days each week (as much or as little time as you can). We set up feeders right outside my office window (note: research on feeders & windows says to put them <5 m or >15 m from windows. Check out Project Feederwatch, contribute to bird science, and enjoy the birds! P.s. you don't even need to have feeders up, if you get birds in your yard, you can count them.

Our feeders were up for days before we saw a single bird. Then yesterday, the chickadees showed up, followed quickly by goldfinches, red-breasted AND white-breasted nuthatches, and a downy woodpecker!! 😍

We set up feeders right outside my office window (note: research on feeders & windows says to put them <5 m or >15 m from windows. Check out Project Feederwatch, contribute to bird science, and enjoy the birds! P.s. you don't even need to have feeders up, if you get birds in your yard, you can count them.

Our feeders were up for days before we saw a single bird. Then yesterday, the chickadees showed up, followed quickly by goldfinches, red-breasted AND white-breasted nuthatches, and a downy woodpecker!! 😍

A great day of birding with members of the Chignecto Naturalist Club at Cape Jourimain & Cape Tormentine! These are two fantastic spots for birding in southeast New Brunswick. We got a total of 41 species 🤩 my faves were the raptors, including Merlin, Peregrine Falcon, and Sharp-shinned Hawk x 2.
